At Nathan Louis Dental, we believe prevention is better than cure. Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy. This helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more.
Dental cleaning and exams allow dentists to identify problems and take care of them right away. This is recommended every 6 months, in addition to your at home cleaning routine.
Tooth whitening, also known as ‘teeth bleaching’ lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discoloration. The most common reasons for tooth discolouration are tobacco stains, tea, coffee, wine, dark coloured food dye and general aging.
There are two types of teeth whitening, in-chair whitening which takes place in the dental office and take-home whitening which is completed in the comfort of your own home.
A crown is used to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. Materials include ceramic, gold and metal alloys and acrylic.
Your dentist may recommend a crown to:
- Replace a large filling when there is not enough tooth remaining
- Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Attach a bridge
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment.
Bridges are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth. They span across the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges. Dr Louis can help you decide which to use, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. Bridges can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.
Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement of dental aesthetics in colour, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance.
A dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line that allows your dentist to mount replacement teeth or a bridge into that area. An implant doesn't come loose like a denture can.
Dentures are custom-made replacements for missing teeth and can be taken out and put back into your mouth. Today's dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever. Replacing missing teeth can help to improve your appearance and smile, ability to eat and speak more comfortably.
A mouthguard is a thick, often spongy shield that fits over your teeth. Mouthguards are usually worn during sports and other activities that involve a high risk of impact to the face to avoid injury. An injury can result in a loss of one or more teeth, broken or chipped teeth, jaw fractures or injuries to the soft tissue of the mouth.
If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, Dr Louis will try to fix it with a filling, crown or other treatment. Sometimes, though, there's too much damage for the tooth to be repaired. In this case, the tooth needs to be extracted. A very loose tooth also will require extraction if it cannot be saved.
Fillings help restore teeth damaged by decay back to their normal function, and can prevent further decay. Dr Louis will consider a number of factors when choosing which type of filling material is best for you. These factors include the extent of the repair, where in your mouth the filling is needed and the cost.
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it. The common causes affecting the pulp are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, repeated dental treatment to the tooth or trauma.
