About Nathan Louis
I started playing music when I was four and oil painting when I was six and I have always been gifted at creating things by hand. Throughout my life, the union of my academic and artistic abilities opened many doors and is one of the reasons I am a dentist today. Being a musician allowed me to gain a scholarship at the Central Coast Grammar school to complete my high school education and I would say this is the door that opened my academic opportunities to be a dentist. Prior to me, none of my family had been to university so this was a great privilege for me. Also, being a musician helped me win a scholarship to live and study in Hungary for a year in the 1990s at the end of the Yugoslav civil war. The events and human suffering that happened around me changed my focus and the way I view the world today.
I graduated in 2007 from the University of Sydney at the top of my year. I had the opportunity to become a specialist and as I considered this opportunity, I decided not to for a couple of reasons. The two main reasons I decided not to specialise were because I enjoy the whole range of procedures in dentistry and I like caring for my patients in a holistic way, rather than focusing on one particular interest or need.
I feel that as a general dentist, I am better able to care for the needs of my community in a broader and more meaningful way. I work closely with a range of specialists who are highly skilled and can therefore offer my patients everything they could possibly need from a dentist. Studying dentistry at Sydney University, unlike many other universities, it is compulsory to complete the theory component of Medicine degree in order to graduate dentistry. For this reason, I am very competent and confident in treating patients with complex medical needs.
For the last 10 years and still today, most of my patients come to me because their friends sing my praises. I recognise though, that there are many other people who want to come see me because they are looking for someone who will genuinely care for them. Care tends to be a soft word, however, when it is coupled with clinical excellence this is where my practice excels
My practice represents a return to community minded and practicing ethically. I see everyone as individuals with different needs and desires. For me it is important that you feel empowered to make your own decisions about your oral health. I can help you with this, however, at the end of the day I respect your varied and individual choices for each treatment option you wish to pursue.
Over the years, individuals have turned dental practices into profiteering businesses. Currently, there is a trend for large corporations, including private health funds, to buy local dental practices with the goal of making money out of the patients by over treating to meet daily budgets and treatment quotas. Often, these practices have not been rebranded so as a patient, you may never know which practice is owned by a big corporation - we are not.
At Nathan Louis Dental, you are not a number or a statistic. You are a person with needs and values that we respect. I have been a local on the coast for almost 40 years and my desire is to have a fulfilling career looking after the individuals and families in our area
